The Only Way To Say Goodbye

It lasted exactly ten days,
My fairy tale romance.
A crazy whirlwind
of wonderfully silly antics.
Oh, but it was perfect.
So far from any
scrap of reality,
So close to nothing real.
What’s it like to become
consumed by fantasy?
What’s it like to be
anyone but me?
Crystal mornings explode
on a perfect aqua horizon,
Sunrise painting hues
I’ve never seen.
Afternoons of sublime
non existence,
Soaking in the salt
infused air,
Feet Covered in the tiniest
white pebbles.
Nights handing out
passion, like candy,
to any willing takers.
Put on a pretty dress
and dance like there’s
no tomorrow.
I hear the ocean now,
and it’s just the two
of us,
It’s the only way to
say goodbye.
Put away a decade or so
and never look back.
It lasted exactly ten days,
My fairy tale romance.
A crazy whirlwind
of wonderfully silly antics.
Oh, but it was perfect…

It’s so funny that I wrote this last night before seeing today’s prompt! I wasn’t sure of publishing it, but now I just must! So, it really is the best way to wrap up NaPoWriMo this year.

I left a shadow of myself on that beach, a darkness I once knew as light. Under a sky that seemed a universe away I knew this would be the final goodbye. I thought that when this moment came, my soul would literally be turned inside out and my heart would be rendered useless. Yet, under that foreign sky, feet immersed in foreign sand, lips pressed to an upturned bottle of false courage, I unleashed the truth and bled dry tears of anguish…I let you go and set me free and now I walk an unworn path as freely as before I knew you.
